New Concepts for spatial planning in Germany
The challenges in spatial development must be seen against the background of the space-relevant trends in demographic and economic structural changes as well as in settlement, traffic and infrastructure development. General social trends, in particular, in globalisation, European integration and German reunification, have had effects on current and future developments and lead to changes in the spatial structure of Germany.
The Federal Government and federal state ministers responsible for spatial planning have adopted on 30 June 2006 new "Concepts and Strategies for Spatial Development in Germany", and in doing so have given themselves a joint development strategy for the cities and regions of Germany.
The concepts state that the three major functions of the spatial development policies of the Federal Government and the federal states are:
- growth and innovation;
- ensuring services of public interest;
- conservation of resources, shaping of cultural landscapes.
