On the occasion of the “Greening Shipping” conference, concrete measures for a more climate-friendly and innovative maritime shipping sector with his EU counterparts, shipowners, ship builders and associations were discussed.

Maritime transport is a mainstay of the European economy. Around ninety percent of the EU's external trade and around forty percent of the intra-European movement of goods go by sea. Europe and the Federal Republic of Germany as an exporting nation are therefore particularly keen to ensure safe, secure and sustainable maritime transport.

Implementing the European Commission's Green Deal will be a challenge for the sector in the years ahead. The Federal Government has thus used its EU Council Presidency to advance further along this road together with the Member States.
