Cycling to be a university subject: On 4 March 2020, the Ministry presented seven institutions of higher education with their “future cheques” to fund endowed chairs on cycling. The actual objective is to embed cycling in research and teaching – from infrastructure planning through mobility management to cycling-friendly legislation.
With a volume of 11.6 million euros, the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) is funding, for the first time, endowed chairs on cycling. 33 institutions of higher education have expressed their interest - specialised master’s programmes will now be accredited at seven of them. The procedures to establish the chairs will be launched before the end of this year.
With the endowed chairs, we are integrating and strengthening interdisciplinary research and teaching on cycling traffic and sustainable mobility. The newly established chairs will conduct research and provide training on key aspects of cycling, such as transport planning, road safety, pedestrian traffic or logistics. They will also be used to trial new technologies and work on tomorrow’s mobility through strong cooperative networks. In this way, we are building up urgently needed expertise for the future.
