Today, Federal Minister of Transport Andreas Scheuer announced nine hydrogen regions in Germany. With the “HyLand - hydrogen regions in Germany” funding measure, the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure is supporting the following nine regions in developing a suitable hydrogen strategy and establishing a network of important actors for its implementation:

  • Kiel region
  • Rügen-Stralsund
  • Schaumburg rural district
  • Lausitz
  • Weimar and Weimarer Land
  • Marburg-Biedenkopf rural district
  • Neustadt an der Waldnaab
  • Reutlingen
  • Ostallgäu/Fuchstal/Kaufbeuren

Mr Scheuer said:

We want to travel climate-friendly sooner rather than later. Hydrogen mobility allows us to do so: refuelling within three minutes and enough for 500 to 700 kilometres. What matters now is to have sufficient refuelling stations across Germany. Therefore, we are supporting nine regions in developing a strategy and establishing a network of local actors. Only with these model regions will we be able to provide green hydrogen for everyone in Germany.

Regional hydrogen production with electricity from renewable energy sources is at the centre of the strategies. The aim is to use “green” hydrogen in the regions on a long-term basis. The strategies do not only include production, but also storage, logistics and different local hydrogen applications with a focus on the transport sector.

“HyLand - hydrogen regions in Germany” funding measure

Across Germany, 85 local authorities and regions have applied for the funding measure as part of a competition. Selection criteria included local motivation, feasibility of actual strategies and suitability as a model region. Each region faces different challenges when it comes to the development of hydrogen strategies. Hence, the selection was to reflect a wide range of starting situations for the local authorities.

  • Coastal area/wind energy (Rügen-Stralsund)
  • Structural change/energy (Lausitz)
  • Industry/automotives (Reutlingen)
  • Metropolitan region/mobility (Kiel region)
  • Education/knowledge transfer (Weimar and Marburg)
  • Regions dominated by SMEs (Ostallgäu/Fuchstal/Kaufbeuren and Schaumburg rural district)
  • Border region/European interconnection (Neustadt an der Waldnaab)

HyExperts and HyPerformer are two additional, currently on-going competitions that form part of the “HyLand - hydrogen regions in Germany”. The HyExperts and HyPerformer categories are targeted at regions that have already gained some experience or want to implement existing strategies. Applications can be submitted until 30 September 2019.
