30 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall: The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, together with Deutsche Bahn AG, is celebrating the anniversary with a competition entitled “30D – Journeys through Germany”.
Federal Minister Andreas Scheuer is keen to receive your personal stories and memories. What was your first, nicest or favourite journey from East to West or West to East? What did you experience on that journey? What have you never forgotten about it? Over the next few months, we would like you to send us your unforgotten experiences – by video, post or email.

Numerous rail, road and waterway projects have brought Germany closer together in the past three decades. The 17 German Unity Transport Projects (VDE) have made an especially important contribution to reunification.

Scheuer:

It’s 30 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall – and this is a reason to celebrate Everyone of us has his or her personal story about reunification. I was 15 at the time and remember sitting in front of the television with my parents, fascinated by the news from Berlin. I will also never forget how, as a young member of parliament, I made my first journey on the bumpy A 9 motorway from Passau to Berlin. So much has happened since then. With the 17 German Unity Transport Projects, the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure has contributed to the unification of our land. We are also a Ministry of Unity.

The VDE programme, which involves funding totalling just under 42 billion euros, was launched by the Federal Government in 1991 to help the federal states in Eastern and Western Germany grow together more quickly. Between the fall of the Wall in 1989 and reunification on 3 October 1990, one thing had quickly become obvious. The essential arteries, the transport infrastructure between East and West, had been almost completely severed or seriously disrupted.

With its competition entitled “30D – Journeys through Germany”, the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure is inviting you to remember how East and West grew together, and not just through infrastructure. There are attractive prizes waiting for those who submit the 30 best stories. You can upload your video clip here: www.bmvi.de/30D
