The Federal Cabinet today approved Federal Minister Volker Wissing’s proposed appointees as Federal Government Commissioner for Rail Transport and Federal Government Coordinator for Freight Transport and Logistics.

Michael Theurer, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport, is the new Federal Government Commissioner for Rail Transport. Among other things, the Commissioner is responsible for developing a strategic overall concept for rail. The Commissioner serves as the liaison for coordination with stakeholders from politics, industry and administration, and advocates for rail within the Federal Government and beyond.

Michael Theurer:

I view the office of Federal Government Rail Commissioner as both an honour and an obligation. I would like use this opportunity to help achieve the coalition agreement’s ambitious rail policy targets as a key element of climate-friendly mobility. I will presently be discussing rapid implementation of the measures in the Rail Transport Masterplan with the Alliance for the Future of Rail. Capacity, quality and customer focus are the keys to making rail transport more attractive. To do so, we must focus on implementing the nationwide integrated regular interval timetable (Deutschlandtakt) and a programme to rapidly increase capacity based on this nationwide timetable. We plan to swiftly harness the potential inherent in digitalization of railway operations and infrastructure. At the same time, I will strive to ensure that more efficient and transparent structures at DB AG strike the right balance between public service infrastructure and competitive transport services, so that we can all benefit even more from rail.

Oliver Luksic, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport, is the new Federal Government Coordinator for Freight Transport and Logistics. The Coordinator is the Federal Government’s central point of contact for the German logistics sector, and champions its causes.

Oliver Luksic:

An efficient logistics sector is both the backbone of our economy and the foundation on which supply chain security is built. That is particularly true for Germany as an exporting nation in the heart of Europe. Working with the entire sector, I will therefore advocate for a competitive, modern transport industry. My goal is to drive forward digitalization and intermodality in logistics. I am also focusing on policy that combines climate change mitigation, technical innovations and economic success.

The appointments were confirmed in the Cabinet today.

Federal Minister Volker Wissing also appointed the first Commissioner for Charging Infrastructure in the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport. Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport, Daniela Kluckert, is to coordinate deployment of charging infrastructure and drive it forward as a priority.

Daniela Kluckert:

Electric mobility is the future of private transport. To prove to people how attractive electric mobility is, electric vehicles must become faster and easier to charge – users must be able to charge their cars quickly nationwide, universally and without unnecessary barriers, like refuelling conventional combustion engine vehicles. We must and will make progress in this area – to reach our own climate change targets and create a strong domestic market for our companies. Only in this way can we maintain our status as world mobility champions, and only in this way can we continue to guarantee affordable mobility for all in future. I aim to do everything in my power to make this happen.
