Together, Federal Minister for Digital and Transport, Dr Volker Wissing, and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Dr Robert Habeck, visited the National Coordination Centre for Charging Infrastructure today. Following an invitation by Federal Transport Minister Wissing, the visit focused both on the work and the digital TOOLs of the Coordination Centre as well as on the establishment of the Interministerial Charging Infrastructure Steering Group (ISLa). The main task of ISLa is the cross-departmental coordination of the implementation of measures from the Charging Infrastructure Masterplan II for an accelerated deployment of a nationwide, demand-based and user-friendly charging infrastructure. This includes linking up the charging network and the power grid, an issue that is becoming increasingly important and which the ministers want to evolve and optimize together by means of the Interministerial Steering Group. The aim is to better synchronize the rollout of both networks.

Lead responsibility for ISLa will be shared between the two ministries. Technical and organizational support is provided by the National Coordination Centre for Charging Infrastructure. The Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport is currently coordinating the new Masterplan with the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action and other relevant stakeholders, such as federal states, local authorities, associations and companies. This Masterplan is to be the Federal Government’s joint roadmap for the rollout of the charging infrastructure and is to be adopted by the Federal Cabinet this autumn.

Dr Volker Wissing, Federal Minister for Digital and Transport: “It is high time we realize that the rollout of the charging infrastructure and the expansion of the power grid require a joint approach. We therefore launched a joint steering group today that brings together all stakeholders in order to drive forward the implementation of the new Charging Infrastructure Masterplan. The aim is to quickly dismantle obstacles, speed up implementation processes and thus provide our power and transport networks with a sound basis for the future. Because one thing is evident: The speedy deployment of a nationwide, demand-based and user-friendly charging infrastructure is a goal that we can only achieve by joining forces.”

Dr Robert Habeck, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action: “The charging infrastructure must not become a bottleneck for the ramp-up of electric mobility. It is especially important to me here that the new Interministerial Charging Infrastructure Steering Group places a strong focus on the integration of the charging infrastructure with the power system. Our aim is to

use renewable energies more effectively, for example by charging electric cars with the solar power system on the roof of your family home or apartment building at low cost. These are the intelligent charging solutions we need to successfully drive the shift to sustainable energy in the transport sector.”

Under the auspices of the German state-owned NOW GmbH and on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport, the Coordination Centre is planning, supporting and accompanying the activities to expand the charging infrastructure in Germany.
